Just for reference the PGX series of PCI cards are officially supported
for the E220r so I've just shipped my friend a couple of PGX32s to try.
I've run into a weird problem with my ultra60 though which has recently
been running solaris - booting firstly aurora 2.98, then debian etch and
the latest ubuntu versions from CD all result in "illegal instruction"
errors just after loading the itidrd. Some quick research actually
showed that this is a very common problem apparently, although I have
never run into it before in years of using sparcs/aurora. I flashed the
OBP to 3.31 [latest version?] with no change. More googling suggested
always cold booting and that does seem to suffice to boot the aurora
2.98 installer from CD ok but all the other distros only get as far as -
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux
They hang there, even with "install fb=true" at the SILO prompt. Rather
more concerning, my archived aurora install on sdb now also fails to
boot with the same "illegal instruction" error [although after a few
more minutes of fiddling I seem to have mostly fixed that - again, cold
booting helps]. I have checked though the OBP values and everything
seems sane, but I've not yet tried net boots or installing via serial.
Now I'm not too worried about this as I prefer Aurora and that does seem
to work with a cold boot but what the hell is going on with this? Has
anyone else seen this, and have a solution?
Thanks
