I got the same error using CD's on an ultra 10. I am installing over NFS

Well hoorah! ...

Aurora SPARC Linux release 2.98 (Victoria) Kernel 2.6.20-1.2986.al3.3 on
an sparc64

I can confirm the 2.98 install works on a T1 105 with one disk
installed.
All be it I had to do an FTP install as it wouldn't work from the DVD
but I suspect that may be a problem with the DVD build and if I'd done
it from multiple CD's it would have worked. So my Linux experience is
about to begin, I have a few friends who use Linux so I will pester them
as much as I can and only bother list members when its necessary. I've
updated the Wiki and will try the install on my T1 100 later this week,
maybe tomorrow.

Kevin
