Mr Gaskins --
     Thanks for the quick reply.  You are quite correct, I did know that the 
sparc5/170 was not supported, although I had read a couple of recent posts 
indicating that aurora was running pretty well on that architecture.  I 
really began to suspect a driver problem when I experienced the kernel panic 
on the SS4 after loading the qlogic module with the drives installed on that 
machine.
     As I said, the raid array appears to be working fine in debian on the 
SS5.  Do you think there's any way to use the array with aurora2.0b2 on the 
SS4?
